Just north of Kodiak, the Tustumena may stop briefly at Port Wakefield/Port Lions, one of six Native communities in the Kodiak Island Borough. Port Lions, a city that in 2001 had about 250 people, was established following the partial destruction of Afognak Village, on Afognak Island, by a tsunami caused by the great Alaskan earthquake of 1964.

All cross-gulf trips include a stop at the port of Yakutat, a community unique in that it is served only on a cross-gulf route. During 2008, the AMHS provided Yakutat with 10 port calls. In 1967, two events acted to severely restrict transportation to and from Southeast Alaska.

In 1921, when he was 21 years old, the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres debuted on October 21st. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation. Homer Gattis lived 9 years shorter than the average Gattis family member when he died at the age of 63.

He spent hours outside birdwatching and feeding the birds, which he absolutely loved doing. He also loved sweets, but most of all Gina’s banana bread, which he enjoyed every morning. Loving father of Liscia , Stephanie , Marco and the late Frank Jr. Dearest grandfather of Angelo, Marco, Francesca, Luciana, Ella, Matteo, Marco Jr. and Gianna. Preceded in death by parents Domenico and Delicata, siblings Ida , Angelo, Giovanni , Guido and Aldo.

Roy was an avid gun collector, he enjoyed reading books and the Bible and also listening to birds. He was a loving and devoted father, husband and grandfather. He was also responsible for using his medical background and knowledge to save both of his children's lives in separate incidents.

The rioting spread throughout the city and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York. In 1965, from August 11 to 16, riots broke out in Watts, a Black section of Los Angeles. An allegedly drunk African-American driver was stopped by LA police and, after a fight, police brutality was alleged - and the riots began. 34 people died in the rioting and over $40 million in property damage occurred.

He married Linda Gattis, sharing 61 years of marriage before his passing. George Daniel Howard Layne Gattis, age 39, a resident of Sparta, passed away April 1, 2022. Layne was born January 24, 1983 in Covington, the son of Nancy Layne Bruegge and the late George Gattis. Layne was employed as a crane operator at Steel Tech. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of North Carolina. She is predeceased by husband William Harrison and parents Daniel and Ruth Gattis.

Ten grandchildren , seven great-grandchildren, other relatives, and many friends. Charlotte - Mr. Gattis, 92, died February 8, 2017, at home after a brief illness. He was a second generation Charlotte native, born November 3, 1924, the younger son of Minnie Smith Gattis and Louie S. Gattis. He was a graduate of Central High School and attended Davidson College. Merrill was an accomplished musician, and while a student at Central, he was invited to play violin with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

I will continue to share the multitude of "Pam Stories" that warm my heart. I am so grateful to have known her and will carry her memory with me always. She loved traveling with Bill, cheering on Duke Basketball, gardening, spending time with her children and spoiling her grandchildren. She worked as an educator her whole life and retired from Wake County Schools.
